It is a fascinating topic, increasingly so the more I dug into the history. You make a good point — the “celebrity effect” works both ways. That was true then, and it is true now. Also, it took many decades for people (most, anyway) to fully accept the validity of smallpox vaccines. So, we may have a ways to go.
